How to Use the European Relocation Calculator

Start by choosing how you want to search:

  • Select Five best cities to compare destinations across the European Union.
  • Select Five cities in selected country to focus on one EU member state.

Next, choose your income scenario. You can keep your current monthly net income or enter a potential job offer. If the offer is expressed as gross salary, the calculator estimates net income using the payroll rules of the destination country.

Enter your current country, city, monthly budget and household type. Your current rent is optional. If you leave it blank, the calculator uses an available city benchmark.

Finally, select your main relocation priority. Available profiles include balanced relocation, saving more money, career opportunities, family and healthcare, or safety and quality of life.

Results update automatically whenever you change an input.

What Does the Relocation Score Include?

Every destination receives an estimated score from 0 to 100. The calculation combines nine factors:

  • Remaining income after estimated monthly costs
  • Housing affordability
  • General cost of living
  • Safety
  • Healthcare satisfaction
  • Career opportunities
  • Public transport satisfaction
  • Digital infrastructure
  • Environmental satisfaction

The weighting changes according to the priority you select. For example, the career profile gives greater importance to employment opportunities, while the family profile places more emphasis on safety and healthcare.

A higher score indicates a potentially stronger match based on the information entered. It does not mean that a city is universally better than another city.

Comparing Income and Living Costs

A lower-cost city does not automatically receive the highest score. Affordability is important, but it is considered alongside salaries, employment prospects, healthcare, safety, transport, digital connectivity and environmental conditions.

The calculator estimates:

  • Monthly net income in the destination
  • Indicative monthly rent
  • Non-housing expenses
  • Total monthly costs
  • Remaining disposable income
  • Housing burden as a percentage of income

This approach helps distinguish between a destination that is simply inexpensive and one that offers a more balanced combination of affordability and opportunity.

Current Income and Job Offer Scenarios

The Keep my current income option is useful for remote workers, freelancers, pensioners and people whose earnings would remain unchanged after moving.

The Enter a job offer option is intended for users evaluating employment opportunities abroad. You can enter either a gross or net monthly offer. When gross salary is selected, the calculator applies the standard payroll model for the destination country.

Actual take-home pay may differ because of personal allowances, family status, local taxes, benefits, bonuses and other individual circumstances.

City Data and National Estimates

Not every indicator is available at city level throughout the European Union. Where reliable city-level information exists, the calculator uses it directly. Where it is unavailable, a clearly identified national estimate or comparable proxy may be used.

Rental benchmarks can also come from different reference periods and housing segments. They should therefore be treated as indicative comparisons rather than exact quotations for a particular apartment.

The calculator distinguishes between direct city data, national estimates and neutral fallback values to make differences in data coverage transparent.

How to Interpret the Results

The score is a decision-support tool, not a definitive ranking of European cities.

A city with a high score may fit your selected financial and lifestyle priorities, but your final decision should also consider:

  • Residence and work-permit requirements
  • Language and cultural preferences
  • Availability of suitable employment
  • Education and childcare
  • Access to healthcare
  • Personal support networks
  • Housing availability
  • Tax residency and social security rules

Use the results to identify promising destinations and then continue with detailed country research.
