Gross Salary vs Net Salary

Gross salary is the amount earned before income tax and employee contributions are deducted. It is usually the salary stated in an employment contract or job offer.

Net salary, also known as take-home pay, is the amount remaining after mandatory deductions.

Net salary = Gross salary − Income tax − Employee contributions

Depending on the country, employee contributions may include pension, healthcare, unemployment, sickness or other social insurance payments.

What Does the Calculator Include?

The calculator provides an estimated breakdown of:

  • Gross salary
  • Income tax
  • Employee social contributions
  • Net salary
  • Employer contributions
  • Total employer cost

Employer contributions are paid by the employer in addition to gross salary. They do not normally reduce the employee’s take-home pay, but they increase the total cost of employment.

For EU countries that do not use the euro, results are shown in the official local currency. An indicative euro conversion is also provided to make comparisons easier.

Compare Net Salaries Across Europe

The same gross salary can produce a different net result depending on the country’s income tax rates, tax-free allowances, contribution rates and social security rules.

The comparison option allows you to compare two EU countries using an equivalent gross salary value. This can be helpful when evaluating international job offers or considering relocation.

However, net salary is only one part of the decision. Housing, transport, food, childcare and other living expenses should also be considered.

Calculation Assumptions

Unless stated otherwise, the calculator assumes that the employee:

  • Is a tax resident of the selected country
  • Receives income from standard salaried employment
  • Is single and has no dependants
  • Claims no special deductions or tax benefits
  • Receives the standard number of salary payments

Actual payroll results may differ because of family status, municipality, region, bonuses, personal deductions, benefits in kind or industry-specific contributions.
