The Finorum Hungary Net Salary Calculator estimates your take-home pay after Hungarian personal income tax and mandatory employee social security contributions. Enter your monthly or annual gross salary to review your estimated net salary, payroll deductions, employer taxes and total employment cost.

Hungary uses a flat personal income tax rate rather than progressive tax bands. However, family allowances, age-related reliefs and exemptions for certain mothers can substantially change the final result.

Gross Salary vs Net Salary in Hungary

Gross salary, or bruttó bér in Hungarian, is the amount stated before payroll taxes and employee contributions are deducted.

Net salary, known as nettó bér, is the amount that remains after the standard deductions:

Net salary = Gross salary − Personal income tax − Employee social security contribution

A standard employee without tax allowances normally retains approximately 66.5% of gross salary:

  • Personal income tax: 15%
  • Employee social security contribution: 18.5%
  • Approximate net salary: 66.5%

This simple percentage is useful for an initial estimate, but it does not account for family benefits, exemptions or personal tax allowances.

Personal Income Tax in Hungary

Hungary applies a flat personal income tax known as személyi jövedelemadó or SZJA.

The standard personal income tax rate in 2026 is 15% of taxable employment income. Unlike progressive systems, the rate does not increase when an employee enters a higher income band. The same general rate applies regardless of whether the employee earns a low, average or high salary.

For example, before any allowances:

  • Gross salary: HUF 600,000 per month
  • Personal income tax at 15%: HUF 90,000
  • Employee contribution at 18.5%: HUF 111,000
  • Estimated net salary: HUF 399,000

This is a simplified calculation for an employee who does not claim any tax benefits.

The 15% standard rate is confirmed in the Hungarian National Tax and Customs Administration’s 2026 taxation summary for private individuals.

Employee Social Security Contributions

Employees generally pay an 18.5% social security contribution, known as társadalombiztosítási járulék or TB contribution.

This combined contribution finances several parts of the Hungarian social protection system, including:

  • State pension insurance
  • Healthcare coverage
  • Labour market benefits
  • Other statutory social insurance entitlements

For standard employment, the 18.5% contribution is deducted directly from the employee’s gross salary by the employer.

The contribution is generally calculated on the employee’s full contribution base. Special rules can apply to particular forms of employment, benefits and low-income situations.

Employer Social Contribution Tax

In addition to the employee’s gross salary, the employer generally pays a 13% social contribution tax, known as szociális hozzájárulási adó or szocho.

This employer tax normally does not reduce the employee’s take-home salary. Instead, it increases the company’s total cost of employing the worker.

For a monthly gross salary of HUF 600,000:

  • Gross salary: HUF 600,000
  • Employer social contribution tax at 13%: HUF 78,000
  • Estimated total employer cost: HUF 678,000

Employers may qualify for contribution relief when hiring certain categories of workers, so the actual cost may sometimes be lower.

Family Tax Allowance in 2026

Hungary provides a significant family tax allowance, known as családi kedvezmény. It reduces the consolidated personal income tax base and can therefore increase take-home pay.

From 1 January 2026, the monthly tax-base allowance per eligible dependent is:

  • One dependent in the family: HUF 133,340
  • Two dependants: HUF 266,660 per eligible dependent
  • Three or more dependants: HUF 440,000 per eligible dependent

In practical tax terms, this can increase monthly family net income by approximately:

  • HUF 20,000 for one eligible dependent
  • HUF 40,000 per child where there are two dependants
  • HUF 66,000 per child where there are three or more dependants

If the allowance cannot be used fully against personal income tax, an eligible insured employee may generally use part of the unused amount to reduce the 18.5% social security contribution.

The benefit may be claimed by one parent or shared between eligible parents. The final payroll result therefore depends on who claims the allowance and how it is divided. The 2026 amounts are published by the Hungarian tax authority in its guidance on the family tax and contribution allowance.

The calculator’s standard result assumes no dependants and does not automatically apply this allowance.

Personal Income Tax Exemption for Employees Under 25

Employees under the age of 25 may qualify for an exemption from the 15% personal income tax on eligible income up to the statutory monthly limit.

The exemption does not usually remove the 18.5% employee social security contribution. A qualifying young employee may therefore receive a considerably higher net salary than an older employee with the same gross pay.

Income above the applicable exemption ceiling remains subject to the standard 15% personal income tax.

Because the general calculator uses a standard employee profile without age-related allowances, workers under 25 should treat the displayed income tax as a conservative estimate.

Allowance for Mothers Under 30

Eligible mothers under the age of 30 can receive a personal income tax allowance on qualifying employment and other specified income.

The exact treatment depends on eligibility conditions, the date on which entitlement arose and the applicable statutory income limit. Family allowances may also interact with this benefit.

A qualifying mother may consequently receive a higher net salary than the calculator’s standard result.

Tax Exemptions for Mothers

Hungary also provides extensive personal income tax exemptions for certain mothers.

Mothers raising four or more children can qualify for a broad lifetime exemption from personal income tax on specified categories of earned income. Mothers raising three children are also covered by a dedicated exemption under the current system.

A new exemption for mothers raising two children is being introduced gradually. In 2026, it generally covers eligible mothers born in 1986 or later. The Hungarian tax authority explains the phased 2026 introduction in its official guide to personal income tax allowances.

These exemptions usually affect personal income tax but do not automatically eliminate all employee social security contributions.

The standard Finorum estimate does not apply these specialised exemptions unless they are explicitly included as a calculator option.

First-Marriage and Personal Allowances

Other deductions can also affect Hungarian payroll calculations.

Eligible couples entering their first marriage may claim a first-marriage allowance for a limited period. Employees with certain qualifying health conditions or disabilities may be entitled to a personal allowance.

The allowances are normally applied through a tax advance declaration submitted to the employer or later through the annual personal income tax return.

Because eligibility depends on individual circumstances, these benefits are not included in the standard no-allowance calculation.

Salary Payments in Hungary

Hungarian employment contracts usually state a monthly gross salary, and employees are normally paid 12 regular monthly salaries per year.

Unlike countries with a statutory 13th or 14th salary system, Hungary does not generally require standard private-sector employees to receive additional annual salary payments.

An employer may nevertheless provide:

  • Annual performance bonuses
  • Christmas bonuses
  • Cafeteria benefits
  • SZÉP Card benefits
  • Commissions
  • Other contractual incentives

Tax treatment can differ depending on the type of benefit. When comparing a Hungarian job offer with one from another country, compare total annual remuneration rather than the monthly base salary alone.

Employer Cost in Hungary

The calculator shows the employer’s estimated total cost separately from the employee’s take-home salary.

The basic calculation is:

Total employer cost = Gross salary + Employer social contribution tax

For a standard employee, this generally means gross salary plus the 13% employer social contribution tax.

The true cost can be higher if the employer also provides bonuses, private insurance, equipment, meal benefits, relocation support or other employment benefits. Conversely, employer tax relief may reduce the statutory cost for qualifying workers.

Why Can the Result Differ From Your Payslip?

Your actual Hungarian payslip may differ from the calculator because of:

  • Family tax allowances
  • Number of eligible dependants
  • Allowance for employees under 25
  • Allowance for mothers under 30
  • Exemptions for mothers raising children
  • First-marriage allowance
  • Personal allowance for qualifying health conditions
  • Bonuses and benefits in kind
  • Employer contribution relief
  • Sick leave or unpaid leave
  • Employment starting or ending during the month
  • Additional contractual deductions
  • Tax declarations submitted to the employer

Currency conversion can also produce small differences. Hungary uses the Hungarian forint, and the calculator’s euro equivalent is indicative rather than an official payroll conversion.

Comparing Hungarian Net Salaries With Other EU Countries

Hungary’s payroll system is comparatively easy to understand for an employee without allowances because the two principal deductions are flat:

  • 15% personal income tax
  • 18.5% employee social security contribution

However, family and age-related reliefs can make the effective burden considerably lower for eligible employees.

When comparing Hungary with another EU country, consider:

  • Annual gross salary
  • Number of salary payments
  • Personal and family allowances
  • Employee contributions
  • Employer taxes
  • Exchange rates
  • Housing and living costs
  • Benefits included in the employment package

A lower net salary in euro terms does not necessarily mean weaker purchasing power, particularly when local living costs differ substantially.
