Average Salary in Luxembourg 2026: Gross, Net and What You Actually Keep

The latest comparable official figure puts Luxembourg’s average annual full-time adjusted salary at €83,000 in 2024, equivalent to about €6,917 per month. This is the most recent annual average available from Eurostat’s full-time adjusted salary series, not an official salary average for 2026.

For take-home pay, Eurostat reports net annual earnings of €50,410 in 2024—about €4,201 per month—for an average single worker without children. The figure comes from the official Eurostat wages and labour costs publication and reflects a standardised household scenario. Actual net pay depends on tax class, deductions, benefits and personal circumstances.

Luxembourg had the highest average full-time adjusted salary in the European Union in 2024. The country combines a highly developed financial sector, strong public institutions, high productivity and automatic wage indexation.

There is no official full-year average salary for 2026 yet. Where current 2026 figures are available—such as minimum wages, social contributions and indexation—this article uses them directly. Older figures are labelled with their correct reference year.

The 2024 Eurostat average and the 2022 STATEC average use different reference years and methodologies. They should not be read as a simple measure of wage growth between 2022 and 2024.

Gross vs Net — Understanding Your Take-Home Pay

Gross salary is the amount before employee social contributions and income tax. Net salary is the amount received after these deductions and any applicable tax credits or allowances.

An official standardised illustration for an average single worker without children is:

StepAmount
Average annual gross salaryHousehold-scenario input defined by Eurostat
Net annual earnings€50,410
Net monthly equivalentAbout €4,201

This is not a personalised payroll calculation, and it should not be combined mechanically with the separate €83,000 full-time adjusted salary indicator. Eurostat’s net-earnings methodology models specific household situations and deducts income tax and employee social contributions before adding any family allowances.

Luxembourg’s employee social contributions changed in 2026. The total pension contribution rate rose from 16% to 17%, normally split equally between employee and employer, making the employee pension share 8.5%. The employee also bears half of the 5.6% healthcare contribution and half of the 0.5% cash-benefit contribution, plus a 1.4% dependency contribution calculated after a statutory allowance. The official rates are listed by the Joint Social Security Centre.

Income tax is progressive. For tax class 1, the Luxembourg Inland Revenue’s official rate schedule starts at 0% below €13,230 of taxable income, rises through multiple bands, reaches 39% from €54,090 to €117,450, and tops out at 42% above €234,870. The amount withheld also depends on tax class and deductible items.

Actual net income therefore varies according to:

  • Tax class
  • Marital status
  • Number of dependent children
  • Deductible expenses and tax credits
  • Bonuses and benefits in kind
  • Whether pay is periodic or non-periodic

Luxembourg’s tax classes can produce materially different withholding amounts for otherwise similar gross salaries. Any net figure in a general article should therefore be treated as an illustrative official scenario, not a guaranteed payslip result.

Salaries by Industry in Luxembourg

Luxembourg has large salary differences between sectors. The most recent detailed official sector breakdown still comes from STATEC’s 2022 Structure of Earnings Survey; no official 2024–2026 sector table with the same detailed annual-pay coverage has yet replaced it.

IndustryAverage Gross Salary per Month
Finance & Insurance€9,418
Education€9,280
Professional, Scientific & Technical Services€8,762
Public Administration€8,372
Construction€4,132
Administrative & Support Services€4,057
Accommodation & Food Services€3,372

Source period: 2022. Monthly equivalents are calculated by dividing STATEC’s annual full-time earnings by 12. The underlying official values are published in STATEC Regards 09/24.

Finance and Insurance

Finance and insurance recorded the highest sector average, at €113,018 per year or about €9,418 per month in 2022. The figure includes bonuses, overtime, thirteenth-month payments and other remuneration covered by the survey.

Education

Education was also among the highest-paying activities, with a monthly equivalent of about €9,280 in the 2022 survey. This reflects the substantial role of public and highly qualified employment in the sector.

Professional, Scientific and Technical Services

Professional, scientific and technical services averaged about €8,762 per month in 2022. The broad category includes legal, accounting, consulting, engineering and scientific activities.

Hospitality and Tourism

Accommodation and food services had the lowest average among the major sectors shown, at €40,461 per year or about €3,372 per month in 2022.

The previous market estimates for technology, healthcare and transport have been removed because they were not based exclusively on the permitted official sources.

Salaries by Region

Official regional comparisons are available by municipality of residence rather than as current 2026 workplace averages. They cover both full-time and part-time employees and therefore are not directly comparable with the national full-time annual salary figures above.

STATEC’s municipal data for March 2022 showed the highest median monthly salary in Niederanven at €6,659. At the lower end, the median was €3,384 in Rumelange, €3,335 in Differdange, €3,306 in Esch-sur-Alzette and €3,167 in Wiltz. The official municipal salary analysis explains that the figures are based on the employee’s municipality of residence and include gross pay, bonuses and pay for hours not worked.

MunicipalityMedian Gross Salary
Niederanven€6,659/month
Strassen€6,070/month
Differdange€3,335/month
Esch-sur-Alzette€3,306/month
Wiltz€3,167/month

Reference period: March 2022; employees by municipality of residence.

Municipal differences partly reflect where high-paid employees live. The Luxembourg City region and its surrounding municipalities contain many financial institutions, international companies and European organisations, while some rural northern municipalities and former industrial areas in the south-west record lower resident medians.

These figures do not prove that an identical job pays differently solely because it is located in a particular municipality.

Cross-Border Workers

Cross-border employment is a defining feature of Luxembourg’s labour market. Workers living in France, Belgium and Germany but employed in Luxembourg are included in domestic employment statistics.

STATEC’s official methodology confirms that domestic salaried employment includes incoming cross-border workers, while excluding Luxembourg residents who work abroad and international civil servants residing in the country.

The earlier claim that approximately 200,000 people commute daily was too imprecise and has been removed because it did not specify a consistent reference date or statistical definition. Salary statistics should be interpreted according to the population covered by each dataset.

Salary Trends — Is Luxembourg Keeping Up with Inflation?

Luxembourg operates an automatic wage-indexation system. When the legally defined index threshold is crossed, wages, salaries and pensions covered by the system rise by 2.5%.

The latest index tranche took effect on 1 June 2026. The government confirmed that the applicable index moved from 968.04 to 992.24, producing a 2.5% adjustment to wages and social parameters.

This mechanism protects nominal income against cumulative inflation, but it does not guarantee that every household’s purchasing power rises. Housing costs, household-specific spending patterns, taxes and changes in working hours also matter.

For the latest EU-comparable price measure, Eurostat reported Luxembourg’s annual HICP inflation at 3.7% in June 2026, down from 4.5% in May, in its official June inflation release. The June indexation and June inflation figure describe different concepts: indexation responds to the statutory cumulative threshold, whereas annual HICP compares prices with the same month one year earlier.

Luxembourg remained the EU country with the highest average full-time adjusted salary in the latest annual Eurostat comparison. However, high nominal salaries must be considered alongside the country’s high housing costs.

Minimum Wage in Luxembourg

Luxembourg has a statutory social minimum wage differentiated by age and qualification.

From 1 June 2026:

  • Unqualified worker aged 18 or over: €2,771.33 gross per month
  • Qualified worker aged 18 or over: €3,325.59 gross per month

The amounts, hourly rates and contribution thresholds are confirmed in the General Inspectorate of Social Security’s official parameters.

The qualified minimum is 20% above the unqualified adult rate. Qualification is not based only on a job title: employees must meet recognised diploma, training or professional-experience conditions. The government’s official minimum-wage guidance explains the applicable criteria.

Worker categoryGross Minimum per Month
Age 18+, unqualified€2,771.33
Age 18+, qualified€3,325.59
Age 17–18€2,217.06
Age 15–17€2,078.49

The values in this table are official amounts effective from 1 June 2026, not estimates.

What Is Considered a Good Salary in Luxembourg?

There is no official statistical definition of a “good salary.” Housing situation, tax class, household size and commuting arrangements can produce very different living standards at the same gross income.

The following factual benchmarks are more useful than subjective income labels:

Gross Monthly AmountOfficial Benchmark
€2,771.33Unqualified adult minimum wage
€3,325.59Qualified adult minimum wage
€4,8442022 median full-time monthly equivalent
€6,9172024 average full-time adjusted monthly equivalent

The median is usually a better guide to what a typical worker earns, while the average is pulled upward by high salaries and bonuses, especially in finance and senior professional roles.

A salary that appears high on paper can provide different living standards depending on whether someone rents in Luxembourg City, owns property or commutes from a neighbouring country.

Bottom Line

The latest official cross-country comparison puts Luxembourg’s average full-time adjusted salary at €83,000 per year in 2024, or about €6,917 per month. This is the best current official annual-average benchmark, but it is not a published 2026 salary figure.

The latest detailed STATEC survey reports a 2022 median of €58,126 per year, equivalent to about €4,844 per month. Eurostat’s separate standardised net-earnings indicator gives €50,410 per year, or about €4,201 per month, for an average single worker without children in 2024.

Finance, education and professional services had the highest sector averages in the latest detailed official breakdown, while accommodation and food services had the lowest. Municipal resident-income data also show substantial geographic differences, but they are not directly comparable with national full-time averages.

From 1 June 2026, automatic indexation raised covered wages by 2.5%, and the statutory minimum wage rose to €2,771.33 for an unqualified adult and €3,325.59 for a qualified adult.

Luxembourg therefore remains the EU’s highest-paying labour market on the latest comparable average-salary measure, but every 2026 figure should be distinguished from older annual, sectoral and median statistics.
